Medical Student Educational Objectives, 9th edition
Objectives and Case Studies

We are pleased to offer a new 9th edition of the APGO Medical Student Educational Objectives. The Objectives are revisited on a regular basis to ensure their relevance, importance and usefulness in assisting with the development of obstetrics and gynecology clinical clerkship curricula.

An Ob-Gyn Student Logbook has also been developed as an example of how to incorporate the APGO Medical Student Educational Objectives into a logbook/tracking system. The logbook utilizes the core 17 objectives as outlined in the APGO Medical Student Educational Objectives 9th Edition as a framework for the various patient-care activities that a clerkship director may require of their students on the ob-gyn clerkship.

The 9th Edition of the Medical Student Educational Objectives is available to order in the APGO bookstore. A two-page summary of the content and chapters can be reached at this link.

APGO e-Bulletin
APGO has developed a new succinct electronic means of keeping members informed about APGO activities and programs, the APGO e- Bulletin. The APGO e-Bulletin is emailed to members quarterly; the next issue will come out in winter 2010. If you would like to receive a copy, or have news or information that you would like included in the winter issue, please email the editor, Claire Herbert at cherbert@apgo.org

Introducing APGO's Basic Clinical Skills Curriculum Teaching Modules

A new online Web site for these modules can be accessed through e-learn.

These modules, written by members of APGO's Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC), are designed as a guide for teaching basic clinical and surgical skills to third-year medical students in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Most of the skills are based on recommendations from the AAMC Project on the Clinical Education of Medical Students. Others were gathered from a review of published curricular guides and from the opinions of UMEC members.

Although it is implicitly assumed that not all medical students will acquire proficiency in many of these skills, the modules are intended to be comprehensive, so they can be used as resources for curriculum development.

The exercises are simple and can be based on inexpensive models that use readily available materials. Resources for more elaborate and expensive high-fidelity models are also provided.

Each exercise includes specific performance-based intended learning outcomes, a description, best practices, a checklist, performance assessment, practical tips and resources.
