The SES Program is an 18-month journey in teaching ob-gyn faculty how to develop and implement surgical education curricula and conduct surgical education research projects at their home institutions. Various surgical procedures and concepts will be used as vehicles for teaching scholars how to transfer skills and knowledge to their students. Ideal scholars for this course will already be proficient in ob-gyn surgical procedures and will be interested in transitioning into formal leadership roles as ob-gyn surgical faculty who are experts at surgical teaching, supportive of other faculty in providing excellent surgical teaching and ready to conduct research in surgical education.

Testimonial from a graduate of the Class of 2023:

I was a practicing physician involved in resident education for many years. My focus had been clinical, and my department director steered me toward the Surgical Education Scholars (SES) Program to address my deficiencies in research knowledge. Prior to the program, I had one scholarly publication. The program helped alleviate any fears regarding clinical research and provided me with additional education in surgical teaching and simulation. The faculty are knowledgeable, collegial, and informative. The program also promotes networking with other physicians in the group. In the two and a half years since beginning the program, I have become a more confident surgical educator. I now have four published abstracts or posters and am involved in no fewer than five different research projects, one of which is the publication of a simulation for operative laparoscopy. Furthermore, I am involved with four other institutions in the development of an app with the support of the APGO Medical Education Endowment Fund Grant Program. Prior to the course, these accomplishments would have seemed unobtainable. I highly recommend the course.
