APGO Letter to Members Affirming Commitment to Abortion Training

On June 27, 2022 the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, leaving the option for states to limit access to or completely outlaw abortion. APGO members teach all types of learners including medical students, residents, fellows, and others involved in providing necessary care to women and all individuals requiring reproductive and sexual health care. It is critical that this decision does not impact the education of our learners.

APGO’s mission is to promote excellence in ob-gyn health care by providing optimal resources and support to educators to improve the quality of life for all patients. To achieve this mission, we must ensure consistent training of our medical students in every state, regardless of the laws regarding abortion access, as medical students often go on to complete residency, and practice, in other locations.

The APGO Medical Student Educational Objectives (MSOs), developed and updated by the Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC), outline the ob-gyn knowledge, skills, and attributes fundamental to the practice of a general physician and form the foundation for consistent training during the ob-gyn clerkship, including:

  • Legal and Ethical Issues in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Pregnancy Termination

The knowledge and skills related to abortion services remain necessary, and APGO will continue to provide resources for use in ob-gyn clerkships and beyond.

The Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) affirms its commitment to preparing these individuals to provide comprehensive reproductive care, including abortion training.

Sincerely,
