Join us for this complimentary member webinar featuring a panel of experts representing the important roles of advisor, program director, student, and student affairs dean. Presenters will share brief remarks based on their roles in career selection and advising. Panelists and attendees (via polling) will then be asked to weigh in on how they and you would handle hypothetical situations and answer sample student questions with significant time available for Q&A.

Maria Paula Arias is a graduating 4th year medical student at the Perelman School of Medicine and an incoming OBGYN Intern at UCLA. She is passionate about optimizing OBGYN medical education, expanding mentorship opportunities, particularly for students who are underrepresented in medicine, and increasing access to care for underserved patient populations. Maria Paula has served various leadership roles to work towards these goals, including serving nationally as the APGO Student board member, regionally as a Prescribe it Forward mentor, and locally as the OBGYN Upperclassmen Chair of the Perelman School of Medicine OBGYN Interest Group.

Samantha Buery-Joyner, MD

Dr. Buery-Joyner served as Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, VCU School of Medicine Inova campus from 2012–2019. In this role she advised and mentored students applying for residencies in all specialties and created a robust Careers in Medicine Program to support medical students throughout the residency application process. In 2019, she was appointed as the Residency Program Director and Vice Chair of Medical Education for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Buery-Joyner is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at VCU School of Medicine, Inova Campus and Professor of Medical Education at University of Virginia School of Medicine Office of Educational Affairs. She is a 2010 graduate of the Association of Professors of Gynecology (APGO) and Obstetrics Academic Scholars and Leaders Program and was selected to serve a six year term on APGO's Undergraduate Medical Education Committee. In 2020, she was named chair for the APGO Diversity and Inclusion Education Guidelines Task Force. Dr. Buery-Joyner has also taught on the national stage and has given numerous successful workshops at APGO Faculty Development Seminars, CREOG & APGO Annual Meetings as well as the Association of American Medical Colleges Meetings. She has received numerous awards, including six times being named the Top Teaching Attending in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine Inova Campus as well as the 2006 Golden Apple Award for outstanding teaching.


Helen Morgan, MD

Dr. Morgan’s career in medical education has focused on creating supportive learning environments that challenge diverse learners to their full potential. She was the Co-PI on the AMA Change Med Ed Accountable Medical Student Education Grant for the University of Michigan Medical School from 2017-2018, and is currently Co-Investigator and Program Evaluation Lead on the $1.8 million AMA Reimagining Residency Grant for APGO Right Resident, Right Program, Ready Day One. She has focused on improving the continuum between medical school and residency and she is the Director of Residency Preparatory Courses at the University of Michigan Medical School. Her other primary areas of scholarly research include diversification of the physician workforce, resident and physician well-being, and gender equity in medicine.


Roxanne Vrees, MD

Dr. Roxanne Vrees received her undergraduate degree from Brown University as a
graduate of the Program in Liberal Medical Education in 1998 and her MD from The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in 2003. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Women & Infants Hospital/Brown University. During her residency, she served as Chief Administrative Resident and was the recipient of several excellence in teaching awards, including the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award for the Core Clerkship in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Her clinical work is as an Academic Specialist in General Obstetrics and Gynecology where her areas of interest and expertise have focused primarily on provision of obstetric and gynecologic care in the emergency room setting, caring for survivors of sexual assault, and provision of trauma informed care. Dr. Vrees has been recognized as a leader in both medical student and resident education and was awarded the national Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence in teaching award in 2012. Throughout her medical education career, she has held several leadership roles including Associate Residency Program Director, Clerkship Director and Medical Director of the Emergency Department of Women & Infants Hospital. As a first-generation college and medical school graduate and the only physician in her family, she has worked tirelessly to serve as a mentor and role model for students and residents from groups underrepresented in medicine (UiM). She currently serves as the and Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and in 2018, was awarded the Mentorship Award in Diversity and Equity in Medicine for her ongoing efforts to prioritize recruitment, retention and mentorship of UiM trainees. In September 2019, she began her appointment as the Associate Dean for Student Affairs at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society that same year. Most recently, she was selected by the MD Class of 2021 to receive the high honor of the Senior Citation.
