The UMEC Corner

Angela Fleming, DO, Jonathan Schaffir, MD, Tammy Sonn, MD

UMEC would like to help you get to know the members of the committee. This month we're featuring new UMEC member Silka Patel, MD, MPH. Doctor Patel is at Johns Hopkins University, where she serves as Associate Professor of Clinical Gynecology and Obstetrics, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, and more.

How did your medical education career pathway begin?
I have had a passion for teaching from as far back as I can remember. I used to tutor back in college along with helping students prepare for exams such as the SATs and MCATS. When I started medical school and I realized that you could make a career out of being both a physician and an educator I never looked back. I was met with some amazing role models and given latitude in medical school to try my hand at curriculum development and design which has really shaped my career.

What was your first experience with APGO?
One of my projects from my Chief year was accepted to APGO for an oral presentation. I felt so proud to be standing in front of my new colleagues presenting my work and realized that even someone as junior as myself had something to contribute. Afterwards several members of the audience came and talked to me about my research and what ideas I had moving forward. This sense of support has been one of the main reasons I continue to love coming to APGO FDS.

What resources did you find the most useful in developing your program (including APGO resources)?
The Medical Student Objectives have been essential in ensuring that we have a comprehensive curriculum for our students. I have also found the cases to be a great way to engage junior residents in teaching as they are quick and efficient and come with answers to give junior residents the confidence to use them.

Describe APGO in 3 words?
Comradery, Dedication, Ingenuity.

What are your favorite hobbies? Or what is your latest book, song, or movie/show recommendation?
Hobbies: love playing card games with my kids (8 and 11), watching the latest superhero movie or rom com, and experimenting in the kitchen. One of my favorite shows of all time is Ted Lasso.

Thank you, Doctor Patel!
