The Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC) is one of APGO’s most prolific committees. It is an exceptionally satisfying committee to work with because of the collegiality of the group and tremendous output of the members and the committee as a whole.

Responsibilities
UMEC members are responsible for supporting the mission and goals of APGO which include improving undergraduate medical education in obstetrics and gynecology across the United States and Canada by:

  1. Providing consultation service to departments with respect to undergraduate medical education programs
  2. Sponsoring and implementing faculty motivational and developmental programs
  3. Proposing basic knowledge and skill requirements for undergraduates
  4. Identifying, developing and evaluating content of learning materials
  5. Identifying, developing and evaluating testing instruments to assess fulfillment of knowledge and skill requirements
  6. Promoting production of quality instructional materials
  7. Disseminating appropriate programmatic materials and information where indicated and feasible
  8. Developing and evaluating innovative teaching and learning techniques

Committee Structure
UMEC is comprised of the Chair, ten at-large members and one ex-officio representative from the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOOG) for a total of 12 physician educator members.

Many factors go into the selection of new members to achieve a well-balanced committee. Applicants are competitively ranked on multiple levels including, but not limited to collegiality and collaborative effectiveness, evidence of APGO participation, educator’s portfolio scholarship and impact, and letters of support.
