APGO Medical Student Educational Objectives, 12th Edition

The APGO Medical Student Educational Objectives (MSOs) define a central body of ob-gyn health knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are fundamental to the practice of a general physician. The APGO MSOs include a comprehensive list of ob-gyn educational topics with intended learning outcomes that have been mapped to the following educational categories: level of competence, instructional methods, assessment methods, ACGME competencies, heath systems science, emerging topics, APGO resources, and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs).

The APGO MSOs are intended to be a resource for clerkship directors, faculty, and students for curriculum development, teaching, and learning. They are not meant to be a mandate for curricular content. Rather, the curriculum content can be expanded or modified based upon program needs. Access to the APGO Medical Student Educational Objectives, Teaching Cases (Faculty version), and the Curriculum Builder is an APGO-member benefit.

Teaching Cases

Most educational topics have an associated teaching case that can be used for case-based learning sessions as well as self-directed learning. The student version has question prompts and blanks to fill in, and the faculty version includes answers and some additional recommended resources. Access to the faculty version is an APGO member benefit.

New! Student access to the APGO MSOs and Teaching Cases – Fillable PDFs has been moved to the APGO eLearning Portal to support APGO uWISE and APGO PrepforRes practice quiz and exam prep. Students should log in to their APGO eLearning Portal account and navigate to the APGO uWISE Course to view and download them.

Teaching Videos

Many educational topics also have associated teaching videos for self-directed learning that reinforce or expand on salient points in the educational topic. The current videos are mapped to the 11th edition of the APGO MSOs. Click here to go directly to the APGO YouTube Channel and the MSO Video Playlist.

Student Logbook

A log that helps learners track their clinical experiences as they progress through the clerkship. Using this organized tracking system can help ensure that clerkship directors meet LCME requirements.

Curriculum Builder

An interactive tool that increases the usability of the APGO MSOs and enables faculty to customize the curriculum according to the desired learning objectives. The Curriculum Builder allows the user to search for key words within the educational objectives as well as filter the individual learning objectives based upon selected educational topics and categories such as EPAs and ACGME Competencies. This is an APGO member benefit. The Curriculum Builder is currently mapped to the 11th edition. The updated Curriculum Builder mapped to the 12th edition is under construction with an anticipated launch of 3Q 2026.

Undergraduate Web-Based Interactive Self-Evaluation (uWISE)

An interactive web-based examination designed to help medical students acquire the necessary basic knowledge in obstetrics and gynecology, regardless of future medical specialty choice. It includes high-yield practice questions in the NBME format that mimics the ob-gyn Shelf exam. Quizzes are mapped to the APGO MSO educational topics. A separate subscription is required.

Periodic Assessment

The APGO MSOs are reviewed on a regular basis by the APGO Undergraduate Medical Education Committee to ensure their relevance, importance and helpfulness in assisting with the development of obstetrics and gynecology clinical clerkship curricula. APGO’s goal is to create materials that allow our members and learners to be authentic and respectful of others' identities and perspectives.
