Coming Next Month: CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting

The 2022 CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting is March 9-12, in Orlando, Florida, with the theme Together Again, Together Forever: Med Ed Family Reunion. Advanced registration is closed, but you can still register online.

We’ve also revised our cancellation policy to waive the administrative fee for cancellations due to COVID-19 or certain institutional restrictions on work related travel. Please visit the main meeting page and select “Registration Policies” to learn more.

Creating a meeting this unique, complex, and beloved is complicated and requires securing meeting space and guest rooms years in advance. After careful analysis, we’ve determined that if for any reason we are unable to conduct the meeting in person, we will not be able to offer a hybrid, virtual, or on-demand meeting this year. We’ve weathered the storm of COVID-19 meeting cancellations for a year and a half; that, combined with the possibility of incurring costly hotel cancellation penalties and the size and scope of this meeting, make it cost prohibitive for us to go virtual.

The safety of all attendees is our top priority, and we continue to work closely with the Rosen Shingle Creek Orlando to plan accordingly.

CD School 301 is the advanced level of the course, but the program is designed for clerkship directors of all experience levels. The interactive sessions will cover intermediate and advanced subjects that every clerkship director should know. Attendees will leave the course with tools and resources to take back to their home institutions.

Board Spotlight: John Dalrymple, MD

At the APGO Board of Directors virtual meeting in August, a new slate of members was approved for ratification by the APGO membership. Over the past few months, we have profiled the individuals on the slate. This month is our last profile, featuring John Dalrymple, MD, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, candidate for President Elect.

APGO: What was your first experience with APGO?
Doctor Dalrymple: My first experience with APGO was attending a Faculty Development Seminar session somewhere in Florida back in the early 2000s. But my most memorable first experience is participating in the APGO Solvay (now ASL) Program (Class of 2005)! That experience truly helped launch my academic career into the wonderful world of ob-gyn medical education! I also met some amazing educators who continue to inspire me and are some of my closest and dearest colleagues and friends.

APGO: Why did you want to join the APGO Board of Directors?
Doctor Dalrymple: I joined the APGO Board of Directors initially as UMEC Chair and am now serving in my capacity as Chair of the Development Committee. I've always wanted to stay involved with APGO and have a literal "seat at the table" when thinking about the mission, vision, goals, and strategies of an organization that has given me so much and that means so much to me.

APGO: What has APGO meant to you during your career?
Doctor Dalrymple: APGO has been a part of my professional life for the past 20 years; I can't imagine doing all that I'm able to do without the community of faculty, superb educational resources and programming, and wonderful support and opportunities that APGO provides. Being surrounded by like-minded and such inspiring and motivating people – faculty members and staff alike – is what makes APGO such a special organization. I love APGO for all that it stands for, for the people and for being a significant part of my life journey as an academic ob-gyn educator!

APGO: What is one personal contribution you hope to make during your term on the APGO Board of Directors?
Doctor Dalrymple: I am so excited to give back to APGO during my term on the Board of Directors. One personal contribution I hope to make is by thinking of innovative ways to directly involve more APGO members in all the great programming and opportunities that APGO provides. Whether by joining committees, working on projects, or staying connected through new initiatives – I want to ensure that everyone has a chance to benefit and enjoy all that APGO has to offer.

Thank you, Doctor Dalrymple!

Now Available: New and Updated Self-Assessment Test Bank Questions

Each year, APGO’s Testing and Self-Assessment Committee reviews and updates questions for the Undergraduate Web-Based Interactive Self-Evaluations (uWISE) and Preparation for Residency Knowledge Assessment Tool (PrepforRes). New and updated questions for PrepforRes are now available, and uWISE will be updated in spring 2022!

Preparation for Residency Knowledge Assessment Tool (PrepforRes)
The interactive, web-based examination measures the didactic knowledge of incoming ob-gyn interns based on the ACGME level 1 Milestones. Institutions also use this tool for their boot camp/residency preparation. The exam is available to medical schools and residency programs through an annual subscription to the APGO uWISE program. This exam is also available as a standalone subscription for schools that do not have a uWISE subscription.

APGO updates all the test bank questions annually.

Click here to learn more about PrepforRes.

Undergraduate Web-Based Interactive Self-Evaluations (uWISE)
This approximately 600-question interactive self-exam is designed to help medical students acquire the necessary basic knowledge in obstetrics and gynecology, regardless of future medical specialty choice. This resource is available to institutions with a subscription, and individual student subscriptions may also be purchased.

APGO updates 50% of the test bank questions annually.

APGO Maintains Spirit of FDS in Pivot to Virtual

The 2022 Virtual Martin L. Stone, MD, Faculty Development Seminar took place January 9-10, 21, and 28. The surge in COVID-19 Omicron cases forced APGO to make the difficult decision to move the meeting online. Despite disappointment at not being able to gather in person, the flexibility and patience of attendees, speakers, and organizers helped foster an atmosphere of togetherness and collegiality.

Despite being online, the 233 users who downloaded the meeting platform stayed connected. 85 different discussion topics were created in the Community Board, attendees shared 89 photos with each other, and a total of 3,576 messages were exchanged. Additionally, 159 users came together to create 9 meet-ups, both online and in-person!

Plenary Speakers at the Virtual FDS included:

  • Megan Evans, MD, MPH, “Becoming an Advocacy Star: Using Your Voice Every Day in Every Way”
  • Amy Park, MD, “Leading with Your Best Self: Leveraging the Power of the Internet and Social Media”
  • Nora Osman, MD, “Don’t Move the Goalposts: Aiming for Equity in Medical Education”
  • Erica Marsh, MD, “Preparing the Next Generation: Critical Race Theory, Anti-Racism, and the Future of Medicine”
  • Nadine T. Katz, MD, President’s Session, “Managing the Unexpected Decisions and Leadership”
  • Joseph Kaczmarczyk, DO, MBA, Invited APGO Member Plenary, “Clinician Educator Milestones: Exploration of a New Frontier in Medical Education”
  • Bryan Carmody, MD, “The Match: Lessons from the First 70 Years”

The meeting also included highly rated sessions, selected by the Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC) in a blinded abstract review. Attendees had their pick of 25 Breakout Sessions, 13 Round Table Sessions, and 10 Innovations.

Congratulations to the 2022 William N.P. Herbert, MD, Promising Educator Award winner, Shannon DeGroff, MD, from University of Connecticut.

APGO would like to thank UMEC for planning the meeting, particularly Co-Chairs Elise Everett, MD, MSc, Christopher Morosky, MD, MS, and Laura Baecher-Lind, MD, MPH.

As a reminder, all FDS content will be available on the meeting platform until April 25, 2022. Attendees can watch session recordings from the meeting, including Plenaries, Workshops, Round Tables, and the Innovation Festival, and interact with other attendees in the Community Discussion Boards.

Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you in person again soon!
