After attending the amazing CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting last month in Seattle, it dawned on me how lucky I am to work alongside such a dedicated community of educators that are committed to advancing women’s health and medical education.

The Annual Meeting was an extraordinary success. The energy, collaboration, and the thoughtful dialogue throughout the meeting reflected the strength of our community and our shared commitment to preparing and training the next generation of obstetrician-gynecologists. I am deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of the meeting: our speakers, planners, members, and the outstanding APGO and CREOG staff who made the meeting possible. 

I would like to congratulate Nadine Katz, MD, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the meeting. It was truly moving to see the impact that she has had on so many learners and colleagues throughout her career. Her leadership, presence, vision, and kindness have made such a difference in our medical education community and in our specialty.  Nadine— “Thank you.” 

I would also like to congratulate our ASL program graduates. Both the ASL and SES programs are APGO capstone programs that are designed to equip ob-gyn educators with leadership, teaching, and mentoring skills. These programs are essential in the creation of successful educators. I would like to encourage current and aspiring medical education leaders to apply to these extremely important APGO Capstone Programs. The deadline for ASL program application is April 20. SES will hold its next call for applications in January 2027 for a September 2027 start.

In addition, I would like to thank John Dalrymple, MD, for his service as APGO President for the past two years. We are truly grateful for his warmth, wisdom, and expertise. His steady leadership, courage, and grace have kept APGO moving forward at a time when things could have easily gone awry. Thank you, John, for your many years of service to APGO.

It is a profound honor to serve as President of APGO. APGO has long been a cornerstone of excellence in medical education, uniting educators who share a commitment to preparing the next generation of physicians to care for women and families with compassion, scientific rigor, and dedication to equity. 

This year, the APGO Board of Directors will be developing a new strategic plan. In 2023, the APGO Board of Directors approved a new strategic plan that addressed three major objectives: 1) To ensure and elevate APGO’s relevance moving forward, 2) To increase membership engagement and inclusivity, 3) To create, organize and optimize resources. This year, the Board of Directors will embark on the creation of a new strategic plan for APGO.

We are witnessing a period of rapid transformation in medicine – advances in science and technology, evolving educational models, and growing recognition of the persistent disparities in women’s health outcomes. These challenges also present an extraordinary opportunity for leadership. The new strategic plan will allow the APGO Board of Directors, along with its members, an opportunity to shape the future of obstetrics and gynecology education. This will be an exciting time for APGO, and we will need help from all our members. We will be asking for volunteers, and we will be asking for suggestions. 

APGO’s strength as an organization comes from the passion, creativity, and commitment of our members. Whether mentoring students, leading residency programs, advancing scholarship, or developing curricula, APGO educators play an essential role in shaping the future of our specialty.

I am deeply grateful for the dedication of our members, our volunteer leaders, and the extraordinary APGO staff who make this work possible. Together, we will continue to build a community that supports educators, elevates learners, and advances the health of women everywhere.

Thank you for the work you do every day to inspire the next generation. The APGO Academic Scholars and Leaders (ASL) Program is accepting applications for the Class of 2027-2028.

The Academic Scholars and Leaders (ASL) Program, now in its twenty-seventh year, is a national, longitudinal faculty development program of the Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology (APGO). The ASL program provides faculty with the opportunity to grow and acquire the skills critical to advancing as teachers, education program administrators, and leaders. The curriculum uses an evidence-based approach to support learning objectives in instruction, assessment and feedback, curriculum development and evaluation, leadership and professional development, and educational scholarship. With more than 575 graduates from more than 145 institutions, the ASL Program has been cited by members of APGO leadership as a career turning point.

The fifteen-month program is designed to train faculty with the following objectives:

  • Consider education a scholarly pursuit
  • Improve the quality of education and educational leadership in the specialty
  • Introduce faculty to educational scholarship through coursework and a project
  • Enhance academic advancement of participating faculty

As called for in the APGO Bylaws, all paid APGO member departments are eligible to participate in the election of Board of Director Officers and Members via a proxy system. Proxy ballots were sent on  October 1 via SurveyMonkey to current APGO member department chairs. APGO is your association, and your vote is important to determining its future direction!

BenchPrep’s award-winning learning management system (LMS) includes a Learning Hub for students and a Branch Manager Console “one-stop shop” for all administrator tools. Each subscription will have its own unique admin site. The LMS is mobile responsive, includes many new features including confidence assessment, testing tools, and the ability to create custom APGO uWISE Practice Quizzes. Learners will also be able to use analytics to track their progress and performance.

What a great pleasure to be writing to you on the heels of an incredible CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. The meeting was well-attended and featured exceptional programming. I’m grateful to the program chairs, program committee, staff, and invited speakers as well as all the individuals who submitted and delivered their valuable content. During such a tumultuous time for many of us, to be among dear friends and trusted colleagues was both healing and uplifting. I left Philadelphia feeling even more inspired and committed to the critically important work we do as ob-gyn medical educators and providers.

Please join me in congratulating Nancy Gaba, MD, who received the APGO Lifetime Achievement Award (LAA) on Thursday, February 27. I encourage you to watch the LAA video to learn more about the award and to hear Doctor Gaba’s moving words about the colleagues and learners who have shaped her career in ob-gyn medical education, her family’s support, and her long tenure as a member of APGO.

I also want to congratulate the 24 graduates of the 2025 Academic Scholars and Leaders (ASL) Program and 22 graduates of the 2025 Surgical Education Scholars (SES) Program. While watching the graduation videos, I was reminded of my own experience as an ASL Scholar 20 years ago and the many ways in which it enhanced my career in medical education. I learned and developed many of the skills that I use daily and formed lifelong friendships and professional relationships. I heartily encourage current and aspiring medical education leaders to apply for these APGO Capstone Programs. APGO is accepting applications until April 8.

The APGO leadership, staff, and I recognize that we are living through extremely disruptive and chaotic times. APGO members are dealing with a lot, and we are here to support you in your very important work in ob-gyn medical education. The APGO Board of Directors met on February 26 and had a chance to dive deep into the current state, as many of you all are doing at your own institutions. We want to affirm APGO’s mission and commitment to its members. As is evidenced by the critical and necessary work we all do every day to care for our patients, communities, faculty, learners, and each other – we are a strong and vibrant community of ob-gyn medical educators. APGO is committed to providing the resources, partnership, and support you need. A Sincere Farewell

After 24 years, I have decided to hang up my APGO name badge and move on to my next chapter. I depart with mixed feelings as APGO has been such a large part of my life. I have been here long enough to remember when we used a credit card slider machine to record CMEs and remember stuffing themed meeting bags, with four-inch-thick meeting programs! I still use the bags for my groceries!

My interaction with APGO members remains the highlight of my career! I’ve enjoyed assisting you in the (sometimes frustrating) tasks of renewing memberships, registering for meetings, and printing receipts. I hope that you found a sympathetic voice at the other end of the phone/computer. It was always my goal to be helpful and informative and to provide personal service in a timely manner…always with a smile. Meeting in person was icing on the cake, putting a name with a face!

I’ve had the pleasure of watching some of your careers grow for 20+ years, along with your families. True friendships were made that I will always treasure! You, too, have watched me grow. My son Joe was 14 when I joined APGO. He had the good fortune of attending some meetings with me and interacting with a lot of you. He is now a married man with 2 young daughters, and they will be a leading part of my “next chapter.” APGO afforded me the opportunity for a really rewarding career while still being a hands-on mom! I’ll always be so grateful for that.

I am convinced that APGO has the BEST members! I am inspired by the time, commitment, and dedication given by you to ob-gyn medical education. Watching the UMEC members work throughout the years has been nothing short of amazing! I’ve always been so proud to be part of this Association. I’ll be watching as you continue to make huge marks in the medical field and fondly think “they were one of mine!”

APGO staff, throughout the years, have worked tirelessly to ensure that your association remains one of the best among the practices. You are in good hands!

The Surgical Education Scholars (SES) and Academic Scholars and Leaders (ASL) programs are accepting applications. But hurry, time is running out to apply for these APGO Capstone Programs!

The SES Program develops confident, professional ob-gyn surgical educators who are able to design and implement surgical curricula, and conduct and publish surgical education research. SES graduates will be prepared to fulfill major surgical educational responsibilities and positions within their institutions. The next SES class will begin in September 2025.

The ASL Program is designed to equip ob-gyn faculty with the knowledge and skills to be effective educators and leaders. The program, now in its twenty-sixth year, also trains participants to take a scholarly approach to education. The rigorous 15-month dynamic curriculum is taught by nationally known educators.The next ASL class will begin in January 2026.

Surgical Education Scholars (SES) Advisory Committee
Deadline: April 28
The SES Program Faculty Advisory Committee serves as advisors and mentors for SES scholars, develops the course curriculum, and delivers content. The APGO SES Faculty practices continuous quality improvement to ensure that the SES curriculum is current, relevant, and responsive to the needs of each cohort of scholars. Prior participation in the SES Program is beneficial but not required.

Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC)
Deadline: May 19
UMEC is one of APGO’s most prolific and collegial committees. UMEC facilitates the improvement of undergraduate medical education by producing motivational and developmental programs for faculty, proposing minimum knowledge and skill requirements for undergraduates, identifying, developing, and evaluating content of learning materials, testing instruments, and more.

These one-hour timed tests mimic the experience of a Shelf Exam. The practice exams are a great resource for students preparing for Step 2.

The tests have already been uploaded into APGO uWISE subscribers’ portals. Please note that students may only take each practice exam once.
